Brugge is the capital and largest city of the province of West Flanders in the Flemish Region of Belgium, in the northwest part of the country. Along with a few other canal-based northern cities it is sometimes referred to as the Venice of the North. Brugge has significant economic importance, thanks to it port, and was once one of the world's chief commercial cities. Brugge is a major tourism destination within Belgium and is well known as the seat of the College of Europe.

The medieval architecture in Brugge is mostly intact, making it one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe. The "Historic Center of Brugges" has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000.It's medieval buildings include the Church Of Our Lady whose brick spire reaches 379 feet making it the world's second highest brick tower/building.

Brugges' best known landmark is the Belfry of Brugge, a 13th century belfry housing a municipal Carillon comprising of 47 bells. The Belfry of Brugge independently is a World Heritage Site. The city employs a full-time carillonneur, who gives free concert regularly.
